Cittàslow: The Art of Slow Living in Italy
24 September 2025
There are places in Italy where time seems to slow down: life flows smoothly, without fuss, where harmony with nature is valued, traditions are carefully preserved, and every moment is savored. These are small towns and villages where “slow living” has become an art of living. This philosophy is embodied by the Cittàslow movement, or “slow cities.” It was founded in 1999 in the Tuscan town of Greve in Chianti by the mayor and a group of enthusiasts. They were inspired by the success of the Slow Food movement—a movement dedicated to preserving culinary traditions and respecting locally produced products. The main idea is to slow down, value quality of life, respect nature and traditions, and develop local identity.
Cities that join the Cittàslow network commit to adhering to more than 70 criteria, ranging from environmental sustainability and support for crafts to the preservation of architecture and the organization of cultural events. There are many such cities in Italy, but today we’ll tell you about three of them: Orvieto, Cortona, and Positano. Here, the spirit of “slow life” is especially vivid, and its true meaning lies not in the quantity seen, but in the depth of the experience.
