Orvieto: A City Above the Clouds and Umbria’s Wine Pearl
24 September 2025
As if hovering above the green hills of Umbria, Orvieto rises on a tuff cliff left by an ancient volcano. Its history spans nearly three millennia, and each century has left its mark. The magnificent Cathedral, glittering with mosaics and reliefs, is considered one of the greatest works of Italian Gothic architecture and impresses with a grandeur rivaling that of Florentine churches. Piazza del Popolo and Piazza della Repubblica preserve the spirit of medieval life, and narrow cobbled streets lead to viewpoints offering endless panoramas of valleys and vineyards.
Here, it is important not just to see, but to experience—step by step, allowing the space to unfold to the rhythm of Cittàslow (an international movement of which Orvieto is a part).
Not far from the city, amid gentle hills and vineyards, rises the Castello della Sala. Built in the 13th century, it served as part of a defensive system and was the scene of feuds between noble families. Since 1940, the castle has belonged to the Antinori family, who have transformed it into the heart of winemaking. Here, you can visit Bottega Castello della Sala and taste the estate’s finest wines, including the legendary Cervaro della Sala, recognized worldwide.
Continuing your wine journey, you can relax at the Altarocca Wine Resort, an elegant adults-only resort set amid 20 hectares of vineyards and olive groves. The complex combines comfortable accommodation, gastronomy, and the region’s wine culture. Guests are accommodated in spacious suites, apartments, and villas, nestled among gardens and fragrant avenues. At the heart of the resort is a 500-square-meter Wine Spa, offering treatments using grape and olive extracts, as well as relaxation areas with panoramic pools.
The culinary offerings include the Invinum restaurant, with terraces overlooking the hills, serving traditional Umbrian cuisine made with organic ingredients, and an enoteca (wine repository) with a rich collection of local wines. The property boasts its own winery and olive oil mill, producing organic wines and oils available for tasting and purchase. Altarocca Wine Resort combines nature, comfort, and wine culture—a place to slow down and experience the atmosphere of authentic Umbria.
