France: Provence Vacation Ideas – Verdon Gorge and Lake Sainte-Croix
7 June 2026
When a client has already seen the Côte d’Azur but wants to experience the true depths of Provence, offer them something breathtaking – a driving tour of the “Verdon Gorge and Lake Sainte-Croix.”
So, we leave the Côte d’Azur and head deep into Provence. The drive takes about two hours, but the landscape is transformed within half an hour: first rolling hills, then increasingly steep slopes, and finally the entrance to the famous gorge.
The Verdon Gorge is one of Europe’s most impressive canyons, often called the “European Grand Canyon.” It stretches for about 25 km, and the walls reach heights of 700 meters in places. Stop for a photo at the Point Sublime viewpoint: it offers a perfect view of the bright turquoise river bending in the depths of the gorge.
The next stop is Lake Sainte-Croix. This artificial reservoir was created in the 1970s. Its water is so clear that its hue ranges from a delicate mint to a deep azure, thanks to its limestone bed. The lake has a gently sloping shore where you can stroll, sit on a café terrace, swim, or rent a pedal boat for a ride across the mirror-like surface.
Next, Moustiers-Sainte-Marie. This village, a member of the “Most Beautiful Villages of France” association, is located at the foot of a cliff at an altitude of approximately 760 meters. Its symbol is an eight-pointed star suspended by a chain between two cliffs. Your route will take you along narrow cobbled streets, past local pottery workshops (this craft has been practiced here since the 17th century), to a waterfall right in the center of the village.
Upon request, we can reserve a table for you at the one-Michelin-starred gourmet restaurant La Bastide de Moustiers (Alain Ducasse). There you can enjoy exquisite dishes of local Provençal cuisine.
